If you’ve ever walked down the Parkway in Gatlinburg, munching on a corn dog and dodging airbrushed T-shirt shops, you’ve probably assumed the town was named after some beloved, rugged mountain hero.
You know the type—wrestled bears, saved orphans, and made really good biscuits.
Well, grab a chair (preferably a comfy one at The Obsidian Den), because the real story is way funnier.
👉 Gatlinburg is named after a man the locals hated so much, they literally ran him out of town.
Meet Radford Gatlin: The Ultimate 1850s Troll
Before Gatlinburg had pancake houses and neon attractions, this peaceful valley was called White Oak Flats. Life was calm. The Ogle family—the area’s first settlers—were minding their business.
Then, around 1854, along came Radford Gatlin.
Radford was a flamboyant preacher, a businessman, and—by all historical accounts—a professional instigator. He opened the town’s second general store and convinced the government to place the local post office inside his shop.
Since he controlled the mail, Radford simply started stamping “Gatlinburg” on everyone’s letters.
No heroic deeds.
No mountain conquered.
Just… stamps.
And somehow, the name stuck.
The “Cattle Stick” Incident (Yes, This Is Real)
Radford didn’t stop at creative branding. He and his wife, Elizabeth Gatlin, were constantly feuding with neighbors—especially the Ogles.
In an actual court record, Elizabeth Gatlin was charged with assault for beating her neighbor’s cattle with a stick.
When the neighbor confronted her, she reportedly tried to beat him with the same stick. Radford jumped in, things escalated, and both were fined.
Not folklore. Not legend.
Actual Smoky Mountains history.
To make matters worse:
-
Radford was an outspoken Confederate sympathizer in a strongly Union-leaning region
-
He started his own church… and got kicked out
-
He spent an impressive amount of time suing his neighbors
Basically, if Nextdoor existed in 1855, Radford would’ve been permanently banned.
The Ultimate Smoky Mountains Irony
By 1859, the residents of White Oak Flats had enough.
Radford Gatlin was chased out of town—banished from the very place that now carried his name.
And yet today, every time someone:
-
Books a cabin
-
Buys a Gatlinburg magnet
-
Tags their vacation on Instagram
They’re unknowingly honoring a mail-stamping, cattle-beating exile who lived there for barely five years.
History has jokes.
