Arrive, and leave the noise behind
The best weekends start with subtraction. You pull up to the A-Frame on a quiet wooded road in Lake Ariel, and the world you left behind — the notifications, the calendars, the small urgencies — simply doesn’t follow you through the door.
Smart-lock self check-in means you arrive on your own schedule: no front desk, no small talk, no one else’s timeline. Inside, the timber A-Frame rises around you, tall glass pulling the forest deep into the room. You drop your bags, open the deck door, and the first thing you notice is the smell — pine, cold air, woodsmoke from somewhere far off. The hot tub is already steaming. You’ll be in it within the hour.
Phones go into a drawer. For the next two days, the only screen that matters is the 135-inch one in the theater room.
Saturday, shaped by nothing
There is no itinerary. There is only the light moving across the trees, and the two of you deciding — slowly, wonderfully — what comes next.
Slow mornings
You wake without an alarm to birdsong and the particular quiet of the Poconos. Coffee tastes different on the deck: richer, somehow, with cool mountain air around it. The full kitchen is there if you want a proper breakfast; the deck is there if you want to sit in silence and watch the morning mist work its way through the trees. Take your time. There is nowhere to be.
The sauna-and-soak ritual
By afternoon, the barrel sauna becomes the center of gravity. Step into the dry heat and feel the week drain out of your shoulders; then slip into the hot tub and let the steam rise around you both. There is no better conversation than the kind that happens with no hurry and no one listening — just the two of you, the water, and the woods. Alternate between sauna and soak until you lose track of the cycle. Then do it once more.
A nap by the fireplace
Between the heat of the sauna and the comfort of the living room, the fireplace has a way of finishing the job. Curl up on the couch with a book, or each other, or nothing at all. This is the luxury the weekend is really about: unstructured, unbothered time.
Movie night on the 135-inch theater
Dinner can wait. Movie night cannot.
Sink into the leather recliners and let the 135-inch screen fill your field of vision — this is cinema at the scale it was meant to be experienced, except you’re in your socks and there is no one in front of you. Pick the film you’ve both been saving. Pop popcorn in the full kitchen. Dim the lights, and for two hours the A-Frame disappears and you’re somewhere else entirely, together.
It’s the kind of night that reminds you why you left the city: here, the evening isn’t the space between dinner and sleep. It’s the main event.
If you feel like wandering
The A-Frame is gloriously self-sufficient, but the Poconos are right there when you want them. Walk the shoreline trail at Lake Wallenpaupack, browse the small-town streets of Hawley and Honesdale, or stand at an overlook in the Delaware Water Gap and take in the ridgelines. Each makes a lovely half-day — and each makes the sauna feel even better when you get back.
