🍂 Fall (Sep–Nov)

The Smokies’ most famous season. Color usually starts at the highest elevations in early October and works its way down through early November — and the harvest festivals are in full swing.

Leaf-peeping drives

Newfound Gap Road — the 33-mile trans-mountain highway, with overlooks the whole way and the gap itself at 5,046 feet.
Cades Cove Loop Road — an 11-mile one-way loop past historic cabins, with black bears and deer most active in fall.
Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail — a 5.5-mile one-way loop of forest, streams and old homesteads near Gatlinburg.
Kuwohi — at 6,643 feet, the highest point in Tennessee, with 360-degree views over waves of color.

Gatlinburg Craftsmen’s Fair — 200+ artisans at the Convention Center, Oct 8–28, 2026.

❄ Winter (Dec–Feb)

Crisp mountain air, holiday lights everywhere, snow on the high peaks — and the coziest cabin season of all. This is when the heated pool, sauna and hot tub earn their keep.

Snow & slopes at Ober

- Ober Gatlinburg — skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing, reached by the scenic aerial tramway from downtown Gatlinburg. The ski season typically begins in late November, conditions permitting.

🌷 Spring (Mar–May)

Waterfalls at full flow, wildflowers carpeting the forest floor and the park waking up — spring is the locals’ favorite hiking season.

- Grotto Falls — 2.6 miles round trip via Trillium Gap; the only park waterfall you can walk behind.
- Rainbow Falls — 5.4 miles round trip to an 80-foot cascade, most powerful in spring.

☀ Summer (Jun–Aug)

Long warm days made for waterparks by day, dinner shows by night — and early-morning hikes before the heat builds.

Cool off

- Soaky Mountain Waterpark — Sevierville’s big outdoor waterpark, open for the summer season.
- Wilderness at the Smokies — indoor and outdoor waterparks plus dry attractions, year-round.
